I don't know jack

Can someone help me navigate the maze of jack+alsa?  I have two sound cards, an onboard standard Intel HDA and an external usb-powered audio interface that I use for my podcasts.  Somehow I managed to configure jack so that it routes output through the external mixer headphones, which is great -- now there's no feedback from the speakers when I turn on the mic -- but sometimes I'd like to put the show on auto pilot and listen through the PC speakers plugged in to the internal sound card.

As near as I can tell qjackctl is the way to go, but I've been all over that program and nothing on it says "add a connection to your internal sound card"... I feel really stupid right now and I know it's something simple and obvious that I'm overlooking.  I'd sure appreciate if someone could hit me upside the head with a clue stick.  What am I missing?
