Segmentation fault in X server with ATI radeon

I have a Dell Vostro laptop with both Intel Graphics and a AMD Radeon. With the intel driver everything seems to work but the speed is very slow for games and even the laptop feels slugish.

I have tried the opensource ATI driver with no success. The Proprietary Catalyst does not work either. I would like to use the opensource ATI driver and it is the whole point for this question.

I have read and tried everything in the ATI wiki with no success. I tried nomodeset, using rc.conf instead of mkinitcpio etc.

So I removed the intel driver and I installed the ATI. I put radeon in the mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilt the initramfs. The problem is that X fails to start and seg faults. I rebuilt the xorg and also the ATI drivers with debug and got a backtrace from core dump. Here are the relevant items.

Re: Segmentation fault in X server with ATI radeon

Use code tags instead of quote tags so your post isn't so hard to read.

Few guesses here:
I don't think the radeon driver supports these hybrid setups yet, which is why it's segfaulting when you tried to set it up for early KMS.

Have you looked here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1930450

Seems to suggest someone got a similiar setup running with the Catalyst driver.

Re: Segmentation fault in X server with ATI radeon

Thanks, I changed the tags. I will try out that link and update back. I have to say that I had an openSUSE install on this same laptop before switching to Arch and it worked okay with the catalyst driver so am optimistic.

Don't forget to downgrade to xorg 1.11 or you'll still get segfaults tongue

Re: Segmentation fault in X server with ATI radeon

It looks like you have radeon and vesa fighting over your ATI card and intel and vesa fighting over your Intel card. Does it work if you get rid of the vesa parts and just have two screens, two montiors, two cards?

No it doesn't and I get the same error. I tried with a very minimal xorg.conf with just the two cards and vesa removed in pacman. I also tried to remove intel completely from xorg.conf and in pacman leaving only one radeon card and still same results.

Re: Segmentation fault in X server with ATI radeon

Back when I ran into these types of failures, the radeon module was to blame and I had to try older kernels. You have linux-firmware right? The one other test I can think of performing is starting X with the radeon module unloaded and DRI turned off just to see if it works.

Re: Segmentation fault in X server with ATI radeon

I am using the stock kernel 3.3.5-1-ARCH with the latest update. I tried blacklisting radeon so that it won't load and that loads the intel driver and X works fine if that's what you mean. If I remove intel driver also and leave vesa, I can boot to a desktop just fine too.

Re: Segmentation fault in X server with ATI radeon

Well I meant blacklisting the radeon module but still typing Driver "radeon" into xorg.conf. To see if the segfault is because of the acceleration code in the ATI driver or some other part of it.

I get it. I will try that sometime. Meanwhile I got catalyst running and that will do for now though I had to do some stuff about switching between the two cards to get it to work but atleast the performance is much better.

Many thanks to everybody.

What did you do to get catalyst running ? Which version of xorg ?
