[SOLVED] Harddrive suddenly slow

Hi everybody

I have a server running archlinux with a system SSD and four harddrive for various storage.

I suddenly noticed that one of my drives has become really slow, three of the harddrives average about 90-120mb/s in buffered read when running hdparm but the last one does only 3-4mb/s. I don't know if the harddrive is starting to fail or if it's something to do with the OS.

All four drives are formatted as ext4 and mounted the same way in fstab, Like this:
/dev/sde1 /mnt/harddrive4 ext4 defaults 0 1

How do I analyze the disk further and eventually fix it?

Hi Lazze,

I suggest you start by installing smartmontools and using smartctl to run a short SMART test on the slow drive. That will hopefully give you some idea as to the cause. It also probably wouldn't be a bad idea to open the case and check the cabling to the drives.

Seemed to be a cabling issue, I opened it up and made sure the cables where properly connected and now it works fine. Interesting that bad cabling can cause this kind of issues, i thought it would work or not.

Thanks for the help, now it's time for me to watch the Sweden - Czech Republic in the world hockey championships.
