Last upgrade crippled my set up

Last time I ran packer -Syu ( no I did not note what packages upraded . It was about 25 or so packages)

Blew out firmware from Realtek 8191SE card --> No network access

Blew out driver for USB keyboard & mouse in Xfce. --> No access in gui.

Actions ( All done as root)

Pull down realtek firmware (using a different machine) and placed the data on a usb drive (ext4 format). --> I figured if I could get this up and running I could reinstall whatever was blown out.

edited rc.conf to stop slim from booting. ( Keyboard is ok in command line)

tail -f /var/log/messages.log to get an idea where I could mount the drive.  --> No Dice . Just shows a message that a USB device using ehcdi number 3 or something like that but no device listing to use in a mount command.

dmes | grep -i 'SCSI' --> No Dice except for my hard drive.

So know I have the software to install but no way to mount it. I can move the machine close to my router as it has a nic in it but I would rather avoid that because I really would like to figure out what I am doing wrong.

Any direction would be appreciated.
