I have read the wiki and understand that arch doesn't have oracle / sun java in the repos due to licensing issues. But I was wondering how I could install jdk 7u4 as the highest version I can find on AUR is 7u3. Can I just install it from a tar.gz file from the Oracle website?
Thanks
Al

Modify the PKGBUILD to work with the newer version.

Whenever I tried to install it with yaourt and typed:
# yaourt jre 7.4-1
It just brought up a new line with my cursor on it?

Leave the version number off (edit: and use -S).
I would suggest against using yaourt until you have a good idea of how the AUR works.

yaourt -S jre
Just this. And it works perfectly.
Is better for you to know that packages in AUR aren't "official" packages by Arch team, so think twice before using AUR packages.

1. Read the aur wiki page
2. man makepkg
3. man PKGBUILD
4. what do you need the oracle version of java for anyway?
