Kernel panic when plugging in/unplugging power cord

Hello all,

My issue is that I sometimes get a kernel panic when I remove my power cord or plug it in to my laptop. I say "sometimes" because this only happens every once in a while and I cannot discern any specific circumstances that make it panic vs. not panic when the cord is plugged in or unplugged. I apologize that I cannot provide any specific error message; the kernel panic screen seems to me to be fairly generic (it lists some information about processes; as far as I can tell none of it actually describes what caused the panic) and I cannot find any errors in the system logs.
I have had this happen across multiple Kernel versions on the same laptop (Lenovo Ideapad z560).

Re: Kernel panic when plugging in/unplugging power cord

It might be helpful if you add some information about what kind of power management you have installed (pm-utils, uswsusp,..), if any. Also which desktop you use and if any power-relevant daemons are in rc.conf (acpid?).
Maybe some bios options to set for cpu powermanagement?

Re: Kernel panic when plugging in/unplugging power cord

Really the only power management tool I use is something called batti which sits in the tray and shows charging state and such. No acpid, nothing in rc.conf regarding power tools at all. I use awesome window manager so there are no wm/de-specific applications at play.
I looked at my BIOS setup and cannot find anything which might affect this issue... the only thing there to do with power is a setting which makes the computer beep when the power state is changed.

It might also be worth noting that there is a potential problem with my laptop's PSU/battery. It won't charge past 78% (most of the time... sometimes it will charge fully. It's finicky.), but otherwise it works fine.

Re: Kernel panic when plugging in/unplugging power cord

I read Lenovo did a recall of Ideapad Y560 for some Intel chipset 6(?) problem, but thats a different model is it?
Maybe un-/plug that cord repetitively and watch what happens in the logs (dmesg, kernel, Xorg, error).
Don't have a real other suggestion for you, sorry.

Re: Kernel panic when plugging in/unplugging power cord

I managed to snap an image after it panicked this last time: HVKtd.jpg (sorry for the slight blurriness, but I think most of the text is legible)
Perhaps some of this is useful? Some of the text near the bottom mentions "error" and "acpi"  which may be relevant, but I can't quite make sense of it all.

Re: Kernel panic when plugging in/unplugging power cord

You might want to see if you have pm-utils installed, which may have been pulled as a dependency for another package. If you do try creating empty files in /etc/pm/power.d that match the ones in /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d and see if that still happens.

This appears to have worked! I say "appears" because I can't really know if it will randomly panic again in the future, but as far as I've tested it, it has not panicked.
Thanks very much R00KIE and Strike0.

Re: Kernel panic when plugging in/unplugging power cord

You should try to figure out which script is causing the problem, you never know when it will come in handy trying to figure out some related problem in the future.
