I'm not getting past initial update process after installation without losing internet connection.
The first thing pacman wants to do is update itself then failing to do so with error comments about tzselect, zdump and zic.
I read else where that updating tzdata initially was the way to resolve this matter.
tzdata updated, then attempting to update pacman results in pacman trying to generate a key and fails to do so, stalling the computer.
Rebooting, no internet connection!
If I can't get Arch past initial updating, I've no chance of getting KDE installed.
Any pointers welcome.
Thanks

How do you know there's no internet connection? What does KDE have to do with it? If you require instant gratification, there do exist other distros intended for this.

I don't understand the comment about instant gratification.
I'm attempting to resolve issues I have with my initial install of Arch.
I'm losing internet on reboot as indicated by -Syy reporting that servers can't be reached and the ping test doesn't work.
At this stage KDE is irrelevant but as I said above, I need to sort initial update out before I proceed hence my posting requesting advice.

Can you tell us how your network is configured and post the relevant config files and any errors?
Edit: typos

My network is a simple onboard LAN plugged into an ADSL router via cable.
Regarding Arch configuration, in rc.conf, I edited the HOSTNAME "arch" as suggested by the guide.
I configured a DHCP connection
eth0=dhcp
interface=eth0
This gave me an internet connection on initial reboot and was able to perform initial pacman -Syy.
pacman advised updating pacman first but on attempting this, it was reported that tzselect, zdump and zic in /usr/bin existed and would cause conflict.
This is where I sought advice in Arch forum, finding the recommendation to first update tzdata which proved successful.
Updating pacman has however proved troublesome and loss of internet.

You only need "interface=eth0" in rc.conf as far as I know if you are using dhcp. It should also read HOSTNAME="arch". It would be more helpful if you could post the actual configs.
Is the network daemon starting? What does "ip addr" show?

1. How are you configuring it on Windows or other Linux distributions? Do you need a username and a password to access the internet?
2. Dynamic or static IP? Meaning do you receive a new IP when you start the computer?

The edits in re.conf I've stated above are the only ones I've done in the file. I'll remove the eth0=dhcp and see what happens.
Is the initial syntax content of rc.conf the same regardless of the PC its installed on?
I've always used DHCP for internet on both Windows and Linux.

One thing has occurred to me.
When selecting packages for initial install, I leave the selection as default.
Are there any specific ones I should select for network/internet?

What's the exact behaviour you're seeing once there's "no internet"? What's the output of:
# lspci -k
# ip link
# ip addr
Burninate!

Network now sorted and I have internet each time I boot.
Arch didn't like the onboard LAN so I disabled it via the BIOS and put a pci LAN card in so I now have internet on each boot.
However, I still have errors with package updates.
I reinstalled tzdata and glibc to solve the problem of getting pacman updated as per another posting I read.
Attempting -Syu for full system update, all the packages are download but when installing I get errors as follows.
***************
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
file system: /etc/mtab exists in file system
initscripts: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh exists in file system
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
***************
The install I'm trying is from a 32bit ISO file I download yesterday which I assume is upto date.
Is there any reason why there are file conflicts at each stage of the installation?

Shouldn't this topic be in the Installation subforum?
edit: Oops. I read 'install' instead of 'initial'. Sorry.

This is a rolling release distribution, meaning not all updates are going to go smoothly without any user intervention. When manual intervention is required, these issues will either be documented in the front page news or covered extensively on these forums. Since you installed with the core image, you need to work through several of these manual interventions to get to a fully up to date system. Read the news or search the forums.
For future reference, use the net install image unless you won't have internet for the install process. This leaves you will a fully up-to-date system right away.

Ah, the old mtab error.
This is what Tom was talking about: http://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyste … -required/
# pacman -S filesystem --force
PS: Don't forget to mark it as solved (by editing the first post).
