Hi all,
the first beta of the 4.9 series has been released.
As usual, you find the kde packages in the [kde-unstable] repo, which only contains major beta release.
Read install instruction from here.
NOTE: It requires [testing] enabled.
kde-multimedia has been split, so there's no kdemultimedia-kioslave in 4.9, instead you find:
- kdemultimedia-audiocd-kio
- libkcddb
- libkcompactdisc
Packagers should update their deps when 4.9 hits [extra]. In the meantime, this is a list of the packages that need to be rebuilt if you enable [kde-unstable]:
- k3b (replace kioslave with libkcddb to depends)
- audex (replace kioslave with libkcddb, libkcompactdisc to depends)
- kaudiocreator (replace kioslave with libkcddb, libkcompactdisc to depends)
- soundkonverter (replace kioslave with libkcddb to depends)
- tellico (replace kioslave with libkcddb to depends)
Also, there are:
- a new kdebase-runtime dependence: nepomuk-core
- a new game in kdeedu: kdeedu-pairs
- a new kdebase-workspace dependence: kde-base-artwork
- a new runner: kdeplasma-addons-runners-bing
kdesdk-kdeaccounts-plugin, kdesdk-kdepalettes, kdeutils-ksecrets have been removed from the KDE SC.
Please report any bug to our bug tracker[4] for any packaging bug.
KDE bugs go in the upstream bug tracker.
Have a nice update and testing!

I was waiting for this thread
After the upgrade the battery plasmoid in the system tray says "battery: not present" even if I have a battery and it is present.
On the other hand, the status of the AC adapter is correctly reported.
I already tried to:
- remove the plasmoid and add a new one,
- remove the powermanagement config files,
- remove the .kde4 folder completely.
but still the plasmoid says that I don't have a battery.
Any idea?

Hi,
thanks for the beta! I've been running it for a couple of days without any issues.
The only flaw I've encountered is with "battery applet" (or how is it called, the icon for powermanager). It shows ''Battery: Not present', whilst acpi -V shows correct values. Could it be related to udev-> systemd-tools move?
Many thanks, Mark

..same here. But you were faster this time

Hi,
Could it be related to udev-> systemd-tools move?
I believe it's not, I upgraded to beta1 a couple of days before the udev move (I forgot I still had the unstable repository enabled from the 4.8 beta cycle ) and the issue was already there.
Maybe something related to the rewrite of the plasmoid in qml?
..same here. But you were faster this time wink
9 secs faster, that's a lot

Hi, unfortunately this is a known bug in this release:

Installed a few minutes ago, and (aside from the battery plasmoid issue) first thing I notice is that kwin feels extremely fast ... I even switched to "slow" animations, "normal" just didn't feel right anymore.

Thanks for the fast packaging!
There are some new runners available in kdeplasma-addons 4.9 but they are not packaged: bing, duckduckgo, youtube

Whoops, thanks. Re-building kdeplasma-addons to add those.

Hmm, I can see some strange things in the new activity manager... I use 4 activities, and 4 virtual desktops.
* I setup some icons per activity, but they've been lost when upgrading to 4.8.80
* If I set an icon again, it will not be retained
* More annoying : the state of the activity can be wrong : I have a "django" activity that is shown as "not running" in the activity manager, but that is indeed running. The "meta + tab" shortcut will not include this activity while looping.
* I can't seem to be able to close the "administration" activity
The visual nature of this behaviour makes it difficult to report on bugs.kde.org... A screencast would be more appropriate, I guess.
Anyone else having issues with activities ?

I had the first one too and I had to re-set icons, but activities work fine here.

Had to install xfce to post this message!
KDE crashes in the middle of Ksplash. xfce and xmbc start fine.
I'm using nvidia drivers so I wonder if kwin and nvidia have something to do with this...
Anyone else with the same problem?
Cheers,
P

Having just pointed out kwin. I ran kwin--replace in xfce and it's running fine.

I have a nvidia card too with the proprietary driver and it works fine.
Have you enabled [testing] repo? When i first updated I forgot that [testing] was needed and the workspace crashed at startup.

If someone is using the oxygen-transparent-git package from AUR it's important to upgrade to the git master version instead of the stable as otherwise KWin will crash everytime you open a window.

Nevermind. Problem was with oxygen.so causing segfaults to ksmserver. I deleted all oxygen.so files and reinstalled kdebase-workspace. Bingo!

I have not been able to open "Workspace Appearance" in system settings since installing the 4.9 beta. When I click it, System Settings just disappears. Anyone else?

Do you have multi lib qtcurve installed? I removed this and got it working whenever the repo opened.

Edit: damn again! deleted from pacman cache and reinstalled. Works fine.
#Hi again.
#Is nepomuk/strigi working for you in 4.9? Mine isn't.

Confirmed: "Workspace Appearance" in system settings crushing if qtcurve-kde4 is installed. I don't understand what's that multi lib is all about though - qtcurve is in community repo.
PS Other than that I can't believe it's just beta1, it's working extremely well, wow! 4.9 is going to be outstanding release.

Maybe you should report it to bugs.kde.org ?

Another issues I found:
#1 Cant edit user's details in systemsettings:
it fails on asking me for password with some "chfn" err.; see:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301201
#2 OpenGL detection failure
I'm not so sure about this one, after first time installing this kde release, i restarted X to load the new, but it crashed during startup. Second time it started ok, but now i realized compositing/desktop effects were turned off (OpenGL; I think automatically after the crash at the first start). In systemsettings > Workspace Appearance > Desktop Effects in Advanced tab i selected OpenGL and clicked "Re-enable compositing detection" (or how was it) and it works! (transparency, etc)
Happened to anyone, should it be reported?

Done: Bug 301209 - "Workspace appearance" crush if qtcurve-kde4 is installed

Did you try to rebuild qtcurve-kde4 first?
