[SOLVED (backlight)]Zepto NOX A15 Sleep and Backlight control problems

I recently decided to install arch x64 on my old laptop, and it works really well except for two problems.

Resuming from Suspend to RAM instantly reboots the computer
Where can I learn to troubleshoot something like this, where the restart happens before the system gets any chance to write any logs?

The computer enters sleep correctly (LED indicators). Waking it up in any way causes immediate restart. The wiki only suggested appending "acpi_sleep=nonvs" to the kernel command line options, but that did not work for me. My searches for these problems have turned up with other issues with resuming from s2ram. I am hoping to find some clue as to what is wrong.

Things tried:

  • s2ram with various options (no_kms, acpi-sleep 1/2/3 and so on)

  • enabling and disabling the few bios options this computer has (c-state support, C4 exit timing, Enable C6)

  • echoing "mem" to /sys/power/state has the same result

  • s2disk is also broken in a similar way. Does suspend, but on startup it starts arch as if it had been turned off incorrectly.

Backlight brightness
[SOLVED] I installed the nvidia_bl nvidiabl module from AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=50749), loaded the module and restarted X, and I have backlight control. I have acpi_backlight=vendor as boot option to get the keys working. I only have five different levels (the lower half of the bar when changing it), but to be honest, I think that is enough.

[EDIT2] It appears the "smartdimmer" method used by nvclock was a hack, likely using the  (vulnerabilities fixed in 295.40, so this is not likely to work ever again. It looks like I will have to make do with the nouveau driver if I want backlight control. Since switching drivers requires a restart, I'm probably better off dualbooting windows for the tasks that need the proprietary driver (like gaming).

The only method I've gotten to work on this computer is via nvclock, but nvclock segfaults with the nvidia driver if X is started, and setting brightness before X will only result in the brightness being reset to max. With the nouveau driver brightness can be set also in X. The card is an MXM card, Geforce 9600m GT.

  • echoing to /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness does not do anything. When changing brightness with nvclock, the number in brightness and actual_brightness does also not change.

  • the setpci-method also did nothing

  • nvclock works perfectly with the nouveau driver, with the nvidia driver it outputs "invalid memtype 92010000-9203000" after changing brightness in the console, and simply segfaults when X is started.

  • The cvs version of nvclock does not recognize the card, and won't change the brightness at all, just saying "Smartdimmer is only supported on certain (HP/Samsung/Sony/Zepto) laptops using a Geforce 6200/7x00Go/8x00Go.". I tried editing the sources (in nv50.c) so that the values for dev and subvendor IDs match those on my computer, but it still wouldn't recognize it after building.

The nouveau driver works fine for the most part, but with the nvidia driver I'm able to play a few games (like Limbo and Bastion from the latest humble bundle) which isn't possible with the nouveau driver.
