Having Trouble with WiFi (Ralink RT3070)

I just did my first install of Arch, and I am loving it. My one problem now is getting the wireless to work. I have a Linklyl WUSB100 v2 RangePlus Wireless Network Adapter, which looks like it just isn't recognized. I did some searching, but couldn't find much. Could anyone help me?
   Thanks so much! ~Unsolved Cypher

Re: Having Trouble with WiFi (Ralink RT3070)

Troubleshooting wireless issues is always the same procedure: First, lspci -nn or lsusb output, we need the ID of the thing. Second, the output of dmesg.

Re: Having Trouble with WiFi (Ralink RT3070)

Which kernel are you using? The thing should work with 3.4. If you're using an earlier kernel, try this:

modprobe rt2800usb
echo "1737 0078" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2800usb/new_id

I'm using 3.3.7-1. Pacman says this is up to date. How do I update?

Kernel 3.4.1-1 is in testing. It's already marked stable upstream for a few days, so it will probably be moved to the normal repositories soon.

What Terminator said. In the mean time, do those commands work? If not, in what way are they not?

I'm away from the machine right now, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

There's no sudo in my post. That's for a reason.

Sorry. I get the same result both with and without sudo.

Every time I try to not spell stuff out directly, to encourage people to figure things out on their own instead of just blindly copy-pasting commands, it backfires. I don't know why I still do it then. Must be some sort of masochism.

Examine what you've got: A regular user doesn't have permissions. Sudo doesn't work (you can google to find out why). So what remains? It's not that hard to figure out.

I'm sorry, but I'm a bit new to Linux. Arch is a step outside of my comfort zone. I am not really sure what you are getting at. Log in as root? Could you please be a bit more clear?

Thanks. I did the commands, which seemed to work (they didn't give an error) but nothing seemed to happen. What do I do now?

Re: Having Trouble with WiFi (Ralink RT3070)

You check with dmesg to see if the wireless card came up, then you follow the documentation on establishing wireless connections. I recommend netcfg.

Sorry, but I'm not quite sure how to do this. I typed dmesg, but a lot of text came up. What am I looking for? Also, what is documentation I am looking for? The Arch Wiki? I am using Gnome Shell as a DE, which usually has the wireless icon in the corner. This is not happening, so I'm not sure what is going on. Sorry about my limited knowledge.

Re: Having Trouble with WiFi (Ralink RT3070)

Hi, welcome to the forum, UCypher.

Two things will make your life here easier: use the wiki and try to ask questions in a smart way.  That's all that's required of you, as a new Archer, imo.

My suggestion:  look up Netcfg on the wiki.  You've got your wifi dongle's drivers working I gather.  You can tell dmesg to only play the last 10 or so lines with

dmesg | less

You may or may not require that but it can make things a little less scary.

I don't know anything about Gnome Shell so I have no advice on that.  Keep at it, you'll achieve your current goal pretty quickly I'm sure.

Thank you for the suggestions. netcfg looks pretty complicated, I'm just trying to get my desktop environment to recognize the WiFi, and it isn't. The only reason I'm trying not to get into anything difficult is because without WiFi, I need to be plugged into the router, which makes my position very uncomfortable. Is there a simple way to get my driver to work with the rest of the OS?

Re: Having Trouble with WiFi (Ralink RT3070)

which module does RT3070 use?

If it's rt2800usb, have a look at this thread and see if you feel like compiling the Ralink drivers.

I think I will just try compiling kernel 3.4 and see if that works. Will this interfere with future kernel updates?

Re: Having Trouble with WiFi (Ralink RT3070)

I assume you could also enable the testing repositories and only install the kernel from it. Probably you could do that by uncommenting testing but putting it under core (so that when updating, your software isn't replaced by the newer versions of testing) and then running 'pacman -S testing/linux'. I'm not sure though, I keep away from testing.

This sounds like a great idea. I'll try it out and let you know how it goes.

Not at all. You'd just need to recompile the drivers and load the module after each kernel update.

I would say that the rt2800usb module seems to cause a lot of problems and you may well be on a hiding to nothing. I quit trying to get it to play with my hardware. The Ralink drivers work really well and shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to compile for yourself.

I just tried this, and the install succeeded. I am not sure whether I booted into the kernel, though, or even if grub recognizes it. Is there a way to check this?
