fresh build desktop: ASRock z77 mobo, i5 3570k, currently no graphics card, using onboard.
The live usb boots fine, getting through the selection menu (boot arch, boot existing, memtest, ect) and gets through the init phase, but right before getting to a shell all displays cut out, d-sub, dvi, and hdmi.
Ubuntu live cd works fine, so I doubt it's a hardware issue

That did it, thanks. In the boot menu one of the options was 'arch linux lts', what was that?

its the lts kernel.
