kernel being very very naughty......

Hi guy's trying to reinstall Arch after a little jaunt to check out other distro's, which are whilst capable enough don't fit my needs as well as Arch.

However the new kernel  really dont wanna play on my system, the display is all corrupt, with the text being displaced all over the screen so that i cant even read any error. Have tried booting vga=normal and apci=off to no avail, the stock arch kernel boot fine anyone got any other idea's. I mean if all else fails I'll roll my own not too fussy but  just wondered if any one else had any ideas as I'm stuck at work at the mo.

Box is a fujitsu scaleo p 501
celeron northwood 2995 512 ram
onboard i845g graphics controller (not used)
aopen nvidia fx5200 pci
ac97 sound card

last thing that can be read on screen is that it finds the i845 controller
....

any ideas

try this in the append line for the kernel:

video=intelfb:off

this should disable at least the fb on your onboard card. then try to change the detection order or the gfx card from AGP-PCI to PCI-AGP if that's possible. or disable the onboard chipset completly if you have an option like this.

cool will try that later, bios is set for pci:boot just this particular kernel version thats playing up

well, he said he wasn't using the intel video card. i've had problems with my nvidia card doing this as well, but if you want to use the accelerated nvidia X drivers, then you'll have to do this anyway.

OK so now it works, which is cool but isn't a black screen ugly?

kinda btings me to my next point is it possible to pass two seperate video statements ...

intebfb:off viedo=vesafb:mttr,so so

trying to get the frambuffer running cotvmlinuz26cko but without the intelfb argument aM BACK TO SQUARE ONE

Indeed- but it seems being an inherent FX5200 issue. I also run my Linux boot sequence in text-only mode without FB, the only difference being that my FX5200 is AGP and not PCI. I wouldn't really care that much, but most Linux liveCD's (including Archie) fail to bring up a usable videomode, unless the nvidia drivers are built-in (e.g. the older PCLOS-nv 8.1 liveCD).
Kanotix 2005.3 also works without nvidia stock drivers, but only after restarting X a couple of times.
I've tried "almost" any possible FB available, with no joy.
With an older, ultra-cheapo MX 440 there's no problem at all.

nah neverhad this issue with any other distro or with arch prior to this kernel revision, which now has intelfb support built into it, I may need to rebuild and remove it to get fb support working
