AMD/intel Hybrid graphics in arch

Hello everyone.

I've read about the possibility of having hybrid graphics working in linux here. I know that ubuntu and arch have big differences, and it's actually because of those differences that I like arch, but is it possible to do the same procedure in arch?
I know I could just try it myself but I'm still learning and I think it is way over my head right now.
The arch wiki doesn't mention anything related to that way of making it work so that's were my doubt comes from to.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. This is for AMD/intel hybrid graphics

Re: AMD/intel Hybrid graphics in arch

Welcome to the forums.

Have a look at this wiki article for a (basic) overview on how to set it up (use vga_switcheroo basically).

Re: AMD/intel Hybrid graphics in arch

I've tried that the first time I installed arch on my laptop, and it actually works well. But, besides using the open source driver that has worse 3d performance, I couldn't switch between them at all. It would crash seconds after I tried. So the AMD chip would just be sitting there turned off (I think). I've seen people with the same laptop I have (dv6-6190, i7-2630qm, 8gb ram, amd 6770m 2gb) with both cards working perfectly in that same link, I just would like to know if it is possible to do the same thing with arch, or if there is any big difference between distros that would render that impossible.

Re: AMD/intel Hybrid graphics in arch

Nobody out there? I have the switcheroo method working on my laptop, but it is not by any means the ideal solution. I mean, I can't even connect to the dedicated gpu. Since there is a method to
make it work on ubuntu, it should work for arch too, even if it needed some big adaptations.

PS: I know that they are very different systems, and that Arch's KISS philosophy is to not care about that kind of thing, but it is becoming more and more common to see laptops with dual graphics, I think it would benefit a lot of people.

Hey!
I didn't tried yet to get both cards running at the same time mainly because I don't need that and I prefer longer battery life and a cooler computer over 3D capabilities that I rarely use. However, I'm a bit curious about making both cards works at the same time and even disable Intel integrated card leaving ATi's alone on; with this goal in mind I been researching a bit and found it may not be as hard as it seems, with some patience and trial it should'n be long until I got it working.

FYI here you have the most relevant links that will help you achieve this:

There is also a hybrid-video-ati-intel package in the AUR.

Re: AMD/intel Hybrid graphics in arch

Thank you for the links. I'll try too when I can find  the time to dedicate myself to it. I tried the hybrid package in the AUR and it works like a charm, but it does not enable both cards. I could never make the switch with it. But since there is a way to make the switch in another distro with the proprietary drivers, it shouldn't be that hard to replicate it in arch.

Do some research.  OpenSource means not to reinvent the wheel. Look how other distros do it and ask to implement this into our Arch packages.
