dependency on systemd-tools: keep udev 175 (or fix my keyboard issue)?

Hi, I'm using Arch 64 bit in a chroot on a chromebook. The kernel is Google's 64 bit kernel for Samsung series 5, and at startup I bind-mount and mount the necessary stuff and then chroot using custom init rules in Chrome OS. This laptop with the chroot is my main development machine, so I'd like it to work well.

I had resolved 2 weird issues by keeping an old agetty binary and by staying on udev-175.

I want to focus on the udev thing here. So, the issue is that versions of udev posterior to 175 don't detect the laptop's keyboard and trackpad. So, once I start X, there is no interaction possilbe with the contuper until I plug an external input device. Then, this external device is correctly detected and the evdev module is used, yadda. The laptop's own hardware keeps on not being detected, though.

Anyway, I just kept using udev 175 and everything was fine. But now, with the upgrade to systemd-tools, I can't upgrade my system and keep using udev without resorting to horrible hacks who will ultimately beg me to kill them with fire. Maybe there is a packaging trick that would let me install udev 175 as systemd-tools, but first I wonder is systemd-tools is not more than just udev, and second I think the files layout was quite drastically changed.

So, my questions would be:

  • Is there a way to force udev to kick the kernel in the stomach until it spits and my laptop's keyboard and trackpad for xorg to use?

  • Or is there a way a relatively viable way to use udev-175 with the new systemd-tools package and layout?

  • Some other solution? Can modern X11 still do the good old automated xconfig? Can it ignore udev for some specific input devices?

Thanks

Re: dependency on systemd-tools: keep udev 175 (or fix my keyboard issue)?

If I understand you correctly, this is a problem detecting the keyboard/trackpad, and not the keyboard layout or keyboard driver?

To be sure: post your dmesg (or the relevant parts if any) after booting with the new systemd-tools.

Xorg can be configured (of course) to use a certain driver and/or driver like this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xo … t-Plugging
... but this requires that they are detected (f.e. by udev / systemd).

If the hardware really isn't detected by udev (other than v175), then I guess a bugreport upstream is the way to go. I wouldn't recommend hacking a solution for this, because I think, love it or hate it, systemd will get integrated more and more and using a hack now you should  fear every update to Arch from that point onwards...

Thank you zenlord!

You understand me correctly in that I think it's a detection problem, but it's not a kernel-level problem.

The important point here is that the kernel that is running is not Arch's, and it does detect and makes the various input devices available for udev. The host system is a version of Chrome OS that uses udev 171. The chroot environment (Archlinux) uses the host kernel, of course, but has its own version of udev and related libraries installed. So, this udev poses problems if I install a version > 175.

So indeed it's a problem detecting the input devices that are already connected at the time the X server starts, but it's not a kernel problem, it's a userspace issue that will be a headache to debug and will generate zero interest upstream because it's too non standard... They already have enough bugs that affect normal setups.

That's why I was hoping for a udev guru command, sort of "udevadm register /dev/mouse0 with evdev driver" in xinitrc to get X11 understand and use my input devices.

But otherwise, I'll just look into using X without evdev support for now...

Re: dependency on systemd-tools: keep udev 175 (or fix my keyboard issue)?

Holding back udev will not work well for a lot of reasons.

As you note, the location of lots of files changed, so that will cause issues at some point (not yet though, but as soon as we symlink /lib to /usr/lib).

Most importantly, the libs had an soname bump (from 0 to 1), so lots of programs were recompiled with the new version of the lib, and will crash with the old.

I think the best solution for you would be to run kvm or some other virtual machine, rather than a chroot (not only for the udev issue, putting a second distro in a chroot will break a lot of assumptions about your system...).

I tried a static X11 configuration, it seems not to work. I no more have time to dig, and I agree with you, but as it's not reasonably possible to install a VM on this machine (samsung chromebook), I will now just downgrade everything to pre-systemd-tools versions and stay like that until I can buy a new computer.

Cheers

Re: dependency on systemd-tools: keep udev 175 (or fix my keyboard issue)?

Have you considered just wiping Chrome OS and installing Arch instead (that's assuming Arch is all you use of course)... I have not tried this myself, so don't know if the mainline kernel has the required drivers, but might be worth looking into.

Re: dependency on systemd-tools: keep udev 175 (or fix my keyboard issue)?

Tomegun, I've considered that but the EFI bootloader of chromebooks is really peculiar and it's quite hard to install a stand-alone distro. In any case, the Chrome OS bootloader still expects the kernel to be written "raw" on a dedicated partition, and the existing methods to run your own distro on chromebooks don't even bother trying to get another kernel there. The chroot method I am using is really the only one I can pull off...

Also, yeah, I should have bought another computer, more Arch-friendly, and that's what I will do as soon as I can afford it. The chromebook was cheap, $150.
