XRandR is missing a few critical modes for playing old games, such as 800x600, I assume this is because my TV/Amp's EDID is being more than a little sparse when it comes to supported screenmodes. XRandR currently shows this:
htpc@topaz ~ $ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
DVI-I-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 160mm x 90mm
1280x720 60.0 + 59.9 50.0
1920x1080 59.9 50.0 24.0 30.0 25.0
720x576 50.0
720x480 59.9
640x480 59.9
480x576 50.0
480x480 59.9
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
1920x1080 (0x27f) 148.5MHz
h: width 1920 start 2008 end 2052 total 2200 skew 0 clock 67.5KHz
v: height 1080 start 1084 end 1089 total 1125 clock 60.0HzNow I've seen it mentioned that you can add modes manually by doing this:
htpc@topaz ~ $ gtf 800 600 60
# 800x600 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 37.32 kHz; pclk: 38.22 MHz
Modeline "800x600_60.00" 38.22 800 832 912 1024 600 601 604 622 -HSync +Vsync
htpc@topaz ~ $ xrandr --newmode "800x600_60.00" 38.22 800 832 912 1024 600 601 604 622 -HSync +Vsync
htpc@topaz ~ $ xrandr --addmode HDMI-0 "800x600_60.00"But that fails with:
htpc@topaz ~ $ xrandr --addmode HDMI-0 "800x600_60.00"
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 153 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
Serial number of failed request: 31Despite the mode being listed now under xrandr:
800x600_60.00 (0x2bc) 38.2MHz
h: width 800 start 832 end 912 total 1024 skew 0 clock 37.3KHz
v: height 600 start 601 end 604 total 622 clock 60.0HzAny ideas what I'm missing or any alternate ways of doing this? (or maybe getting EDID to list more than a few not particularly useful video modes)
Driver and card in case it's relevant:
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 430/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 302.17
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.20 NVIDIA via Cg compilerOffline
I also use an 1080p HDTV as my computer's monitor. All sorts of issues when I was using an HDMI input. So, what I eventually did was switch over to the VGA input on the TV. That VGA input handles 1920x1080@60Hz with absolutely no problems at all. If your situation is similar, trying that interface may give you more resolution options than the HDMI port.

That's not really an option, I need the audio over HDMI mainly for the LPCM 6/8 channel over HDMI.
Balls. And here was me loving nVidia for their great drivers ![]()

Ouch, yeah, if you need the audio then VGA is no solution. Sorry man.
Edit, by the way: is your avatar from the old Amiga game "Hired Guns"? ![]()
Edit 2, Yes, yes it is: Linky ![]()

Yup, loved that game. For some added nostalgia - http://retrotracks.net/music/7

I'm all about nostalgia when it comes to the Amiga. WinUAE is installed on my Windows partition, PUAE I haven't been able to get compile though for Arch. I have *ahem* 40GB of Amiga .adf images - TOSEC. I really wish copyright was a sane 20 years as history is simply fading away on the original magnetic medias as they randomize over time by the very material they are made out of.
Thanks for the link, I'll poke around the site for other titles too! ![]()
Edit: check out Legend of Grimrock. It is a "modern" Hired Guns. Hired Guns was futuristic in theme and Grimrock is more fantasy. So, Grimrock is more "Dungeon Master" but similar to both that and Hired Guns in gameplay. And fully 3D, modern implementation.

I noticed Legend of Grimrock on STEAM but it doesn't look anything like Hired Guns. I'm all 'gotic fantas'ied out' right now to be honest.
Let me know if there's anything of note missing from the site, it's one of my random pet projects.
Anyway, back on topic: I saw mention of doing this on the nVidia / nVNews site, but it's had no effect from what I can tell (xrandr still doesn't list the modes and games that need them still crash):
Option "MetaModes" "1920x1080 { ViewPortIn=1024x768 } 1920x1080 { ViewPortIn=800x600 }"Sigh.

Well, it's been 5½ hours as an opportunity for someone to help with your issue. Since there doesn't seem to be a hurry for that I'll pop in a few more links for Grimrock. See This Video for 18 minutes or so of gameplay from a newbie to the game. The footage comes from a prerelease version of the game but I own Grimrock and that is pretty well what the final product looks like. In addition to being available on Steam you can buy Grimrock from Good Old Games Here. That has an advantage that it is a single-file installer with no DRM and no dependencies like Steam. It has a disadvantage that when a new version comes out you have to download the full single file again (around 500MB). But, if you're looking to run it in Linux - via WINE - that DRM-Steam-Free installer might be a better choice. Right now Grimrock comes with just the "Grimrock" dungeon. However, work is being done on the level-editor for it. Once that comes out, as a free update, then you'll be able to create your own dungeons or - probably more fun - play dungeons others have made.
And it's cheap, $14.99 cheap. For about 15 to 20 hours play, just for the Grimrock dungeon, that's not bad.
For music I'd like to see on your site? I looked it up: James Pond 2 Operation Robocod is there, so, shucks, nothing to suggest yet! ![]()
Ok, I'll bow out of your thread now: I hope someone more versed than I in nVidia ways can help you get a proper resolution for your old games going!

Ok, so apparently the problem is that my amp sucks. If I connect directly to the TV I get a massive list of video modes. Sigh.
