hi all.
I am having that problem - when KMS starts - the screen goes black/off and no display. it works only with nomodeset.
i treid the video=SVIDEO-1:d trick, but it dosent work either.
any ideas?

What driver are you using? Proprietary drivers don't support KMS.

I am using xf86-video-intel, which AFAIK is the only one out there,

I had this problem too some time back. For me the system seems to boot in the background but no display. If I added nomodeset to the kernel arguments it would pick up the vesa driver and boot...
The Intel driver needs KMS to load.
I overcame this problem by adding acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Don't know if it is the same issue.

I think this has to something with the Kernel loading the acpi_backlinght driver before the vendor's driver loads. That time i got it from the archwiki.
