From x86 to x64 without complete reinstall?

I recently got a RAM upgrade and would like to use x64 - something I didn't do before because all the multilib stuff seemed like a bit of a hassle.

Is it possible? And what steps would be involved in doing this? Or do you believe it is considerably easier to reinstall completely? Seeing that I cannot install the exact same packages, I'd still love to hear some tips on how to minimize the manual work in upgrading.
