Alright, its been discussed upon, and discussed upon, but discussing will only get someone so far. Dadexter and I took the liberty of creating #archchat for ArchLinux community chat, to seperate support from chat. After the recent events, its just too much and its been giving the Archlinux channel a bad name (Im mostly responsible for that
). I currently have ownership of the channel however as soon as phrature,, aperio, dorphell, cactus, Xentac or someone contact me I am waiting as I will transfer full ownership over to them.
Like Archlinux obviously there are rules that must be followed, blah blah blah. Hopfully this will put some credibilty back into the archlinux support channel...

wahoo!
good job swazo, you get a cookie!
seriously though, I'm with cactus. It's a very good idea. The arch community is part of the fun of using arch, but there's a time for work and a time for play - i think it's important to seperate the two.

Three cheers for swazo...you win the internet for a day! Definitely a good idea to have a place for everything and everyone...don't mix business with pleasure.

There are unspoken rules in the IRC channel - that is to say that being in an official channel you are representing the userbase of archlinux. The channel is for help and for new users.
If one comes off as being rude/disrespectful/whatever, it is a direct afront to the distro itself. By contrast, being in #teeniebopperchatroom you are not representing anything.

Yeh but I thought that was a subtle understanding behind any community such as this, I always felt that kind of stuff is implied, unlike something like #gentoo which lays out rules against /away, Arch doesn't really have any rules besides general netiquette. Trolls and flamers are shunned, and people jump to help whenever possible, I haven't really seen any need for written rules.
Anyways, BEGIN THE MIGRATION OF STUPID TALK TO #ARCHCHAT

This channel was needed much now all we need is an archlinux 0.8 ![]()

We don't need that until 2k6

Sepht there was another topic forget were it was about archlinux go down on distrowatch and basically we assumed it was because we haven't had an offical release for over half a year, which would make sence. I really think we need to throw together and update arch cd and call it like archlinux 0.7.8 or something like that

Arch does nearly yearly releases 0.4 was 2002 0.5 was 2003, 0.6 was 2004, 0.7 was 2005. Of course its a little less then a year so we can expect something later this year, fall/winter.

You can check somewhere to read about the 0.8 "showstoppers" - i.e. what has to be ready before the next release, dunno where that is now but I am sure I have seen it. I'm almost certain there will not be a new release until the next version of pacman with proper license support is ready and it may even wait on adoption of gcc4. As both of these things will require, as I understand it, a recompile of every single package, it probably be best for them to be done together i.e. no time very soon!

Alrighty, then... I totally agree that Arch needed an off-topic IRC channel for all the off-the-wall and fun stuff. Good move! 8)
Wonder if there is someone available "with the powers" that could put a note in the "topics" section of #archlinux to take any off-topic chatter to the other channel?
