Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

So... I just release a pre-alpha of this... it would be great if people could test it. Just remember that it is a pre-alpha smile

I would like to know what people think. This is the first time I try something like this.

At this time, only netinstall is available... but that way you will install and up to date OS big_smile

This first release include in the LiveCD:

- Linux Kernel 3.4.5
- Sysvinit for the moment (future systemd plans)
- LightDM to login with a nice theme
- Latest Cinnamon from the git project

~~ Software included ~~
- Pidgin (IM)
- Xnoise (Music manager)
- Totem (Video)
- Chromium (Web)
- Brasero    (CD/DVD)
- Transmission (torrent)
- Gparted (partitions)
- Libreoffice Installer (Text editor) - Idea from the creator of "Nosonja"
- Gedit
- Cheese (webcam)
- Hotot (Twitter/Identica)
- Shotwell (Photo Manager)

I'm trying to make Cinnarch QT-free for the LiveCD. That way you could have a light Cinnarch version as I can make (650MB) to enjoy a more userlike installation with all the software included. So... no QT neither Mono

The are somethings that need more work, especially the installer wink

Suggestions and questions will be managed in the project's site. Thank you all

Thanks

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

Somehow this attracts me.. Normally I don't like these spin-offs and 'ready-to-desktop'-Arch liveCDs but with this particular setup you do have my attention. I will watch this for a while wink

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

I made some changes in the installer.

Also... I couldn't stay with Chromium because his 100MB "installed size" in front of 38MB with Firefox...

Keep testing big_smile and thanks

You are welcome to use this thread as an announcement for this project, but please be aware that this is considered an Arch derivative distro, and as such, is not supported:

People who want to use this, or any of the other Arch spin-offs, are assumed to be competent enough to deal to any issues they encounter themselves. Please do not turn this into a support thread.

lol...the lightdm-theme looks amazing, screenshot can be found here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cinnarch/

It looks like you use the greeter from ubuntu/unity, right?
So do you have one or more of the aur-packages installed?

lightdm-ubuntu, lightdm-ubuntu-bzr, lightdm-unity-greeter, lightdm-unity-greeter-bzr

I would be really interested in having such a nice theme, thanks!

Yeah, that is right. Cinnarch uses the lightdm-unity-greeter packaged from the PKGBUILD on AUR. Both lightDM and Cinnamon with all theirs AUR dependecies are precompiled, packaged and available from the Cinnarch repo

Nice! Does that mean, that I Could add the repo to my /etc/pacman.conf and use it without encounter problems or will there be any issues?

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

Hi, I just released another ISO today. Cinnarch is now available in two versions,  the regular netinstall version (650MB) and the new minimum-netinstall version (200MB). This new one is in text mode.

Now, the Cinnarch Installer checks for updates of himself in the server (if there is a internet connection) and download the new version.
On first liveCD login you will be asked to select your keyboard distribution (Idea picked from "Nosonja Project")

Chromium is back on Cinnarch smile

And other changes available in the news section of Cinnarch -> http://www.cinnarch.com/cinnarch-and-ci … 012-07-19/

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

Downloaded the 32 bit version and installed it in a VM this afternoon. My first impression is that it's an excellent flavour and you've done a good job with the theme and with the installer, especially by sticking to the Arch Way. I noticed all the locales were uncommented in locale-gen which seems unnecessary.

Good work though, it looks as snazzy as Cinnamon on Mint but with a better (IMO) distro

edit: This may be a n00b question but I'm guessing it behaves exactly the same as Arch once installed (as opposed to Chakra which is moving to a semi-rolling release model and packages aren't strictly interchangeable)? - never mind.

edit2: I don't think the libreoffice installer is needed, libreoffice is a group so it's easy to choose which parts to install

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

Do you have a repo for cinnamon packages or does cinnarch allow updating of cinnamon?

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

I replaced Ubuntu with this on laptop and so far I love it. So far it seems to decently polished and still does everything that I like about Arch. The installer works great and I think I will use this for any other arch installations. I run arch on a few other computers and was wondering how I could update them to cinnarch easily? Is there an easy way to setup my other computers to update from the cinnarch repos and install cinnamon?

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

I don't use Cinnearch, but know that by installing Cinnarch rather than Arch with Cinnamon, you should probably not try and find support for it around the forums (except maybe this thread).

As far as adding the repo, why not just look at Cinnarch's pacman.conf and see what is different there.  I am sure it is probably just an addition repo or two added to the normal ones.  I think the part where you may run into problems is if the packages are signed.  I am not sure where you might find the relevent signing keys.

If you are able to do this without issue, run a -Syy and then use -Sl <repo> to see what packages are contained in each.

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

I'd like to change the identifiers of Cinnarch (during booting, name of kernel image etc) to Arch but I can't seem to find what I have to change. Any tips?

Re: Cinnarch - your favorite distro with Cinnamon desktop

I installed cinnamon with arch and I can't get pulseaudio to work properly. Each time I start the computer alsamixer shows that my speaker channel is at 0% and the headphones channel is at 100% and the Master channel is at 50%. How can I get the speaker channel to stay at a certain level each time I startup? I have alsa-utils installed already and that didn't change anything.
