Have to resume from suspend twice to use machine

The first time I resume from a suspend, the machine resumes for about a second and proceeds to suspend. Upon pressing the power button again, the machine resumes properly. This has been happening since my 3.4.4 update(using nvidia 295.57 drivers. When I use 302.17, the machine completely fails to resume). 

When this started happening, the following error messages would flash on screen during the first resume.

watchdog: INTCAMT: cannot register miscdev on minor=130 (err=-16).
watchdog: error registering /dev/watchdog (err=-16).
mei: unable to register watchdog device.

Suspecting these errors were preventing the resume, I blacklisted the extra watchdog (mei) as discussed in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=133083

Since then, the first resume flashes a black screen at me before the machine suspends again.

Any ideas?
