[SOLVED] GDM hung if launched from rc.conf

Hey All,

Last night, I updated glibc with the change from /lib to /usr/lib and went to
sleep.

Since then, every time I reboot, GDM hangs with the 'waiting' cursor showing
for a long time. The funny thing is, it works everytime when I launch it
manually from tty1.

I have also been having trouble with the other bug in which login is successful
and the shell starts but then everything hangs with nothing except the cursor
working. This also randomly happens at times when I quit any working
application. A perfectly working desktop will suddenly freeze with the
gnome-shell showing with the mouse working but nothing else.

I think all these are related. But I've no clue how to go about any
investigation. Let alone fixing it. I thought it was related to pam but ended
up borking my system further (see last post. big_smile). Anyone has a clue what I
should be doing.

PS: Other randomness observed on my machine which may or may not be related at
all:

1. Shutdowns often fail at SIGTERM and proceed to SIGKILL after a short wait.
2. Whenever I log into tty* I get two(!) logins as my last login info. :?
3. I get this error often:

CIFS VFS: default security mechanism requested. The default security mechanism will be upgraded from ntlm to ntlmv2 in kernel release 3.3

4. And something about a bad rss counter while shutting down. Can't find the
exact error.

PPS: Sorry for the long rant. Just looking for some arch love. smile

Edit: Ah, never mind. Had to remove read -n1 from rc.local.
But if anyone has read this anyway. Any suggestions regarding the rest of the issues?

Thanks.

GNU/Linux: Keep your options "open".

Use inittab instead of /etc/rc.conf

See: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … tab_method

Re: [SOLVED] GDM hung if launched from rc.conf

okay, I am using inittab now and gdm is starting
but
it is still strange that gdm is starting much slower then  usually and I have to wait much longer for active desktop enviroment after enetering password at login.

thank you
