[resolved] mkinitcpio fills screen with errors after update to 3.4.4-3

bizzare errors, its trying to load every module it can think of? never had anything like this happen before.
when i tried to mkinitcpio myself after the auto fail, it looked for the old kernel.

What is sudo pac aliased to?

Have you updated glibc? Read the news if you have not...

Re: [resolved] mkinitcpio fills screen with errors after update to 3.4.4-3

pac is

# pacman aliases (if applicable, replace 'pacman' with 'yaourt'/'pacaur'/whatever)
alias pac="pacman -S" # default action - install one or more packages

and looking at arch from debian:

mike@nbd2:/media/arch-root/usr/lib/modules$ ls -ltr
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 3 22:42 extramodules-3.4-ARCH
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jul 3 22:42 3.4.4-3-ARCH
mike@nbd2:/media/arch-root/usr/lib/modules$

and

mike@nbd2:/media/arch-root/lib/modules$ ls -ltr
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 12 22:11 3.2.6-2-ARCH
mike@nbd2:/media/arch-root/lib/modules$

Re: [resolved] mkinitcpio fills screen with errors after update to 3.4.4-3

Why would you ever "pacman -S linux"??

This means you are installing whatever version of linux that is in your sync database.  Shouldn't you already have this installed?  Clearly you don't, or pacman would have mentioned that it was installed and that it would reinstall.

This means at some point before this command you must have done a `pacman -Sy` but not a full -Syu.

I'm not sure if this is the (only) cause of problems, but partial upgrades can't be expected to work.  Run `pacman -Syu` and then deal with any problems that arise there.

Re: [resolved] mkinitcpio fills screen with errors after update to 3.4.4-3

Your system is out of date, and you won't be able to update glibc until you manually fix any packages that are providing files/folders in /lib/

That includes the 3.2.6-2-ARCH kernel modules. Not sure why you still have those, but I'm sure you have your reasons.

Read the news and do a forum search regarding glibc's recent update if you're confused.

Re: [resolved] mkinitcpio fills screen with errors after update to 3.4.4-3

i actually have no idea why those old modules are there. i didn't do anything with them that i know of.

i was going to do a pacman -Syu, but the download was pretty big for the wireless connection i was on. so i said 'n' to continue. and then tried to do the kernel by itself, since it was half the total download size. but this is a bad idea?

so to proceed i need to find out how to fix glibc. ok i'll look into that. i just hope i can boot back into arch, haven't tried yet.

No.  It's a very bad idea, particularly with anything as important as the kernel.

Easy fix: get a cup of coffee and wait for the `pacman -Syu` downloads to complete.  Odds are you will have to check the front page news for the glibc update, and perhaps older news items, but the source of your current problem is the partial upgrade.

ok good to know! from now on i'll only update with a reliable connection and after reading the news.
i suppose there's a easy way to wget blah blah|less and read it on the terminal.

Re: [resolved] mkinitcpio fills screen with errors after update to 3.4.4-3

as suspected, i can't boot.

it looks like the udev hook isn't working, because when crypt is run it can't find /dev/sda8, and on the console there's no sd* in /dev/. udev was listed three times, as an early hook, normal hook, and clean up hook.

starting to think i'm going to need a recovery cd, but at a year old, will it even work?

na forget that, i'm chrooted in from fedora, debian wouldn't let me for some reason. edit: i think it was mounted noexec...
I've done:

 pacman -Syu --ignore glibc

and that went fine
then tried

pacman -Su

and found i needed to delete those old kernel headers

then tried again and i get

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
glibc: /lib exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

but when i do this

[root@nb lib]# find /lib -exec pacman -Qo -- {} +|grep -v glibc
error: cannot determine ownership of directory '/lib'
[root@nb lib]#

it looks like everything unrelated to glibc is already gone, just the folder /lib itself is causing problems.

also i did a pacman -S linux, like i shouldn't have to begin with, but this time it was able to properly make a mkinitcpio image.

here's the other command the news page suggested to help fix the problem

[root@nb lib]# grep '^lib/' /var/lib/pacman/local/*/files
