[solved] Turning off the screen instead of blanking

My screen goes blank (black) after few minutes of not using the laptop, but the backlight is still on, and if it is at night, you can clearly see the screen actually lit.

How can I change this automatic time-out blanking into proper screen-off mechanism?

If your wm does not support turning off the backlight it you can try "i3lock" from community.

i3lock -d

Will turn off your display instantly after locking the screen.

In the extended settings for screensaver there are power options for the screen.

Run:  xscreensaver-demo -prefs

Select e.g. the option:
Quick Power-off in Blank Only Mode

I have all 3 "minutes" options at the same value.

But is it only for the screen? They sound like computer standby options.

Older monitors like CRT have different power saving settings. With an LCD there is only one (two if you count black screen with lights on). Here is an overview: http://webpages.charter.net/dperr/dpms.htm

Re: [solved] Turning off the screen instead of blanking

I have since discovered that coming back from screen-off takes longer than from normal blank. Is it possible to make the screen first go to blank (say, after 5 minutes) and to switch off only after another 5 minutes?

Re: [solved] Turning off the screen instead of blanking

set it to blanking after 5 minutes, after 15 minutes the Xserver switches off the display automatically. You can probably configure it to switch off the display after 10 minutes.
