I have a refurbished HP laptop. It has a built in webcam. I have no idea what webcam it is.
lsusb doesn't help me, as it's not a usb device.
How do I identify the hardware so that I may find the right drivers for it?

Why do you assert that? Most HP laptops I have seen have internal USB cameras (Edit : including this DV4) . Humor me and post the output of lsusb.
Failing that, try the output of lspci

You need to give me some terminal output to work with here.. Try lshw or lspci or lsusb OR SOMETHING...

...those are the commands I'm looking for. If I can identify the thing I'm confident in my abilities to get the drivers and get it working. I don't even know the commands to try.

No none of those do look like a webcam...
Exactly which model of HP laptop are we talking about - there are numerous different webcams in use across the HP range.
If the machine is "refurbished" is the webcam known to be present and working? (ie under another OS).It is not unknown/uncommon for faulty, non essential, hardware to be physically pulled from a machine before it is offered for resale as used/refurb.
It may also help a tad if you drop the attitude of your 1st posts in this thread as it is hardly endearing or likely to attract many on the forum who are capable of fixing your problem.
The wiki has an excellent page on coaxing many webcam into life: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Webcam

The webcam is physically present, though it's entirely possible that it doesn't work. It is, after all, a refurb. I'm not sure what HP model it is (all identifying stickers were removed before it came into my possession) and I'm not sure if it ever worked (I've never had another OS on it before).

I'm thinking you should try out an ubuntu live cd and see if that detects it.

Another tool that I found recently was "hwinfo" (command is the same)
it will print a vary large output of info related to your system and hardware. If that doesn't find it I don't know what else will. just be prepared to scroll through a lot. If its not installed by now its the repos if I'm not mistake. also the previous post will help to as ubuntu does a decent job at least getting hardware compatiblity. best idea there would be to boot the most recent release and if not try debian. I've had debian recognize things ubuntu didn't on rare occasions. As for hwinfo it should at least detect if the camera is there. Unless its completely not working, then it might not. hwinfo has helped me when the other commands didn't or were reporting inaccurately.
Edit:Few phone typos...
