Video: sometimes only sound

"Sometimes" both mplayer and VLC play only sound when I try to watch a video (no matter if .mp4, .flv or whatever..) The only suspicious output for mplayer I can see is

Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_device_create_x11: 1

I don't think this has anything to do with it though; I have an Intel video card.

Hints?
