backend ecommerce system

I am creating a ecommerce. For now I am focusing my development on site presentation.

But I'm worried about the payment system. I've been researching about ready ecommerce platforms and a relevant term was the "payment gateway" .

Basically what I understood is these platforms already have all the necessary configurations to make security use of these gateways.

I wonder where I can start learnin the techniques necessary to build a platform (not robust) but functional, or is more valid use for a ready platform and only edit the look of the site.
