Hello all!
I have encountered a few less serious problems with my Arch installation and I thought it would be a good idea to post them here in the newbies part of the forum.
I will adress them in the right order, beginning with the boot process of my system and when I manage to solve this I will go on with the next one.
Okay let's begin!
I'm trying to speed up the boot by hiding my GRUB2 menu. I have done what is said in the ArchWiki entry i.e. uncommenting the two following lines:
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=falsein /etc/default/grub and then running the
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfgcommand.
Yes indeed it created a countdown but after the 5 seconds have elapsed the menu pops up, after all...
Worth to mention is that it's not the grub-menu with the Arch logo at the top but the black and white titled "GNU GRUB version 2.0".
I have no separate /boot partition and here is the output of sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda:
Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
1 2048 32027982 15.3 GiB 8300 Linux filesystem
2 32028672 78165326 22.0 GiB 8300 Linux filesystemThe first partition is / and the second one is /home. Should be clear as day though. >.<
If additional information is needed, just let me know!
I'm grateful for all help I can get.
/Matias

Try this in /boot/grub/menu.lst:
timeout 2
default 0
hiddenmenuOffline
menu.lst would be for Grub legacy, this is grub2.
meh

Yeah, that explains why I did not have the file in my filesystem. Thanks anyways!

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
and if you have it
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
Offline
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
and if you have it
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
Thanks! GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 made the trick!
This is how the beginning of my /etc/default/grub looks like now:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
# Preload both GPT and MBR modules so that they are not missed
GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt part_msdos"
# Uncomment to enable Hidden Menu, and optionally hide the timeout count
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=falseFirst I did not get the difference between GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT and the GRUB_TIMEOUT line.
But the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT is used when you wan't to be able to bring up the menu with your ESC key!
Dumb me! I should have studied this a little bit more. >.<
Well well, everything is clear now and this case is solved.
BTW what happened to this pimped out GRUB-Menu that I had on my previous install? Is it GRUB Legacy maybe?

It was probably grub legacy; grub2 has only been added recently. I don't know for sure though; I've never seen a grub menu like that.
You can add a backdrop to grub2, but if you have timeout=0 you don't need one ![]()

It says to press Tab... GRUB Legacy/GRUB 2 do not have such function.
I think you mean the one from the ISO. That's a different bootloader.
I have made a personal commitment not to reply in topics that start with a lowercase letter. Proper grammar and punctuation is a sign of respect, and if you do not show any, you will NOT receive any help (at least not from me).

Yes that's exactly the one I mean! OK cool, I don't know why I concluded that it had to be GRUB.
Thank you for the reply. Maybe I'll customize my bootloader someday to look just as nice as that one.

I'm having the same problem my question is, do I have to run the command
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg after I edited?
/etc/default/grub Thank you
