An updated installation guide with screenshots based on the new installation media 2012.08.04

I 've tried to keep it as simple as it gets - there is no use of any automate script.

Awesome tutorial! This will simplify the installation process for many beginners with the use of the pictures! I haven't used it personally myself because I have Arch Linux already installed.

You can consider trying fdisk instead of cfdisk: it aligns the partitions correctly and the use is simpler than parted.

Also, shouldn't the bootloader installation be done inside the chroot?

Personally I think a single 5G partition is a little small. Yes, Arch will fit in that partition, but not for long if a user fills up /home with picture, videos, and music, and if the same user installs a lot of apps. 5G for just root is too small for many people, and most machines now have much more disk capacity.

Nice one.

I like it that you show people how to verify the hash and signature of the iso. Most people avoid it, but it's crucial. So many tampered installs nowadays.

I've yet to try the new installation media, but with this tutorial (with images!), it will certainly make the transition smoother. Though I have to say, it is not recommended for new Arch users as it lacks thorough explanation of each process. Intermediate users (me included) will get the hang of it though.

you should use pacstrap instead of pacman -r. so you don't need to worry about keyring. and use arch-chroot instead of chroot.

I think it's a matter of taste whether to use the scripts or not. I use them personally but i think theres nothing wrong with this way. I like the tutorial, but if it is targeted to beginners I would recommend to add some explanations. Your steps are easy to follow but beginners often doesn't know much about partitions, filesystems and stuff. So they will learn how to do it, but don't understand why and what they doing. I would also use a GUID partition table instead of MBR. (At least I didn't see any disadvantages for GPT, and users will not run into problems when using greater hard disks.)

In this case it is not complete, the user will run into problems after he uses "pacman -Syu" the first time, because package signing is enabled by default.

I didn't say it was a good idea. He also has people edit grub.cfg by hand, which should not be necessary (or advised) with grub2.

And I'm not sure why he exits the chroot before installing and configuring grub, but daneel971 already mentioned that..

Are you using a 64-bit machine? On my 32-bit machine, only the i686 install is listed.

EDIT: ok my mistake... it was through virtualbox - and it is on 32 bit system installed...

This installation guide isnt an official guide.

That said, is a personal effort to simplify the new archlinux installation process.

Is an example, an example without any use of automate scripts.
There is no menu installer so i cant understand the need of automate scripts either.

(i believe in menu installer or even to a new gui installer)

I will add a new screenshot with fdisk next week.
I believe that cfdisk is easiest than fdisk for new users.

I cannt use grub inside chroot cause there is no grub installed by base system!!!

As i've already mention, this is a guide, an example. I dont tell people to use 5G rootfs partition. I've just show how they can manage to create a rootfs partition.

In fact, i use lvm - and i havent found the time to add this.

With the official installation guide (wat ?) a new user cant install archlinux.
This guide is only for intermediate users.

genfstab failed to add my swap partition! arch-chroot is only one command chroot, why using a wrapper for just a simple command? I dont find them useful at all and i believe that complicate things in the installation process.

The guide isnt perfect, but complete it is.
The problem with pacman -Syu in the first time is a post-install issue.

I thank all of you for your comments and critics.
Archlinux is my preferable linux distro and i am trying to convince people that to install an archlinux isnt rocket science.
You only have to understand a few things: partitions and grub2. Everything else is straight forward.

You do tell people to use a 5G root partition. It's a beginners' guide, and beginners will follow your example exactly. Why not make a reasonably sized partition to start with?

When the beginners who follow your guide come to the forum because their root partition is too small, are you really going to tell them "I didn't tell you to make a 5G root partition"?

okei, i can to that.

I can change the screenshot from 5Gb to 10Gb.

But i am using a 5Gb rootfs partition and i dont have a problem with that.
In fact i am at 90% and my laptop is my primary (and only) machine (work related).

I would be fine with 5G too, but many people will not. There was a "how big is your root partition" thread a while ago, and I think 5G would have been at the very bottom. Some people have 20-30G just for root.

If not using pacstrap, then copy over the keyring after the install, as pacstrap does, i.e. from /etc/pacman.d/gnupg to /mnt/etc/pacman.d/gnupg.

Pacstrap also mounts the virtual filesystems before running pacman, so e.g. mkinitcpio dosen't error out during install of the kernel...
