I didn't read the whole thread.
But I have this setup for displaying/controlling CPU temperature:
1) cpufrequtils installed
2) MODULES=(powernow-k8 ... ) and DAEMONS=(... cpufreq ...) in rc.conf
3) computertemp package installed (CPU temp. applet for Gnome) + CPU frequency monitor from standard gnome-applets package.
I have Athlon 64 3200+ "Venice" CPU, which runs at 1.0, 1.8 or 2.0 GHz, using ondemand cpufreq governor (though Windows XP SP2 is capable of setting CPU to 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 GHz too, I think this is a misfeature in Linux ).
Everything works like a charm.
The only bug I have in Linux but not in Windows is that MPlayer/GXine/Totem lags when switching from one CPU frequency to another, so I have to set 2.0 GHz frequency manually before watching a movie.
