I have same problem with automount in PCManFM since it change to 1.0 version. Before this it works.
I'm using Openbox ang get into my session without login manager. Just using startx with the next .xinitrc.
! xinitrc
xrdb ~merge ~/.Xresources
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
I have gvfs installed too. EDIT: No, I haven't.
Maybe it need a optional packet. Does it?
Installing gvfs it works again. No need optional package.

hi lennie,
i did the changes as you mentioned.
1.all the lines in the xinitrc file commented out including the snippet script which comes by default & appended it with just this one line exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startlxde
2.slim is out and now using startx.
3.pcmanfm is also behaving the same way. No partitions are shown. The only partition seen is the one which i mentioned in the previous post for which an entry is made in fstab by me and the same is seen when i go to /media/mountfolder created by me. By default pcmanfm is not showing any partitions other than / & home of arch system.

I have installed polkit. No polkit-gnome.
I don't know if it make differences.
Edit: no polkit, consolekit. polkit is a dependence.

Alber, You wrote "Installing gvfs it works again. No need optional package."
do you mean to say you are automatically able to see your non-arch system partitions in pcmanfm just by installing gvfs and with no fstab entry for those partitions??
Offline
I had installed consolekit and dbus. Since PCManFM 1.0 I have had to install gvfs.
Now, from a USB, where I have another archlinux running, I get the Archlinux's partition names installed in the machine's hdd. And yes, they aren't in my fstable.
Neither I had to change polkit.
Added:
Partitions of the own Archlinux running don't appear.
I don't know. Maybe you need another packages to see msdos and ntfs partitions. dosfstools, mtools, ntfsprogs, ntfs-3g.
Added 2:
Now I have consolekit, dbus and gvfs. I wanted to say that no gvfs optional package is needed.

i dont know so far i have not got any correct answer to this query of mine. I wonder how the ubuntu guys are doing this. Because on my ubuntu system neither a fstab entry of other partitions are there nor a permanet mnt/media folder is created. Since it loads everything in the /media folder, i find things are created on the fly when you mount and as soon as it is unmounted, the folder also vanishes in the /media. Default there is only two items in my media folder a link with the name floppy and a folder with the name floppy0.
I was thinking to replicate the same on my arch linux system, but so far no successful answer to the same. Wonder if anyone has done his system that way.

Why don't you see if you can figure out how it is done in Ubuntu? E.g. search their documentation, examine config files, look for log messages just after creating a new partition...
If you want it to work "just like Ubuntu" that seems to be the obvious approach to take. The answer must obviously be on your system already (although searching their docs might make it easier to find depending on how obvious it is).

Something is really wrong with your system. What you want is actually the normal behavior after a successful install. (Except from that you need to change an udev rule to be allowed to mount as user, but the partitions should at least show up in a filemanager. )
I'm quite sure this and your other problem are related. Reinstall dbus, consolkit and gvfs to see if that helps.

Really? Mine show up because I added them to fstab. As far as I know, there's no reason they should show up by default.
Of course, it might depend on the filemanager, too.

Here is my experience of a new install, with lxde just as the op has. I only needed to install gvfs and all partitions showed up in Pcmanfm.

For starters, I would set up LightDM/Unity or GDM/Gnome-shell and see if it works like Ubuntu. This would be a better comparison than Ubuntu vs Arch with LXDE.

I just discovered Dolphin lists "Devices" under "Places". In my case, these all appear at mount points in the file system, too, because they are all included in fstab. But I suspect they would show up as "Devices" (but unmounted) anyway. Is that what you mean?
I don't use a file manager much, to be honest... I don't think Finder did this, though - unmounted stuff disappeared.

Just say that automount device (automaticly mounted) is now mounted in /run/media/username/medianame
Example. My USB named blueking is mounted in:
/run/media/alberto/blueking

Interesting. I wonder if that's what happened to my usb stick today. I just figured KDE's automount stuff wasn't working right and it thought it had mounted stuff when it hadn't really. So I just mounted it using pmount and it showed up under /media, of course.
If this is right, though, should /media be a sym link to /run/media? Or should it be removed? Or?

I believe /run/media is the new mount path chosen by udisks2, Gnome 3, or a combination thereof.

after a fresh installation of lxde again as i posted here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1150007
The situation is still the same. No other partitions are shown in pcmanfm. For a change i also installed thunar and the status is same.
I had to install gvfs as else trash is not working. Also gvfs-afc is installed.
The only partition which i could earlier mount is a ext4 partition which i mount via an edit of fstab; since the same is now commented out in fstab, it also does not get mounted.

I'll resume what I have:
Window manager openbox.
installed consolekit (not polkit-gnome as say lxde wiki), dbus (activated its daemon in rc.conf) and gvfs (I don't use trash, but in a near future I'll try gvfs-smb).
Too, added this line to .xinitrc
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
I have no experience with lxde. I can't be more helpful.
Added:
polkit is a consolekit's dependence.

OP keeps comparing arch to ubuntu, im here to tell him they are both different entitys, arch encourages users to edit config files, fstab being merely one of many,if you are not comfortable editing fstab then im afraid arch might not be the distro for you, however i do hope u stick with it and make arch work for you as its simply the best. On another note after recent well documented events i went native systemd (openbox) and also removed consolekit (which is no longer maintained and systemd renders it obsolete, saved 60 running threads ) systemd handles the automounting very well.

@Cirrus
When I installed Openbox and PCManFM there were two options for automount, one using consolekit and another with gvfs. I chose consolekit. Since PCManFM 1.0 new version, it looks like that it just use gvfs. I was thinking to remove consolekit and see how automunt works. But I was waiting that the wiki (Openbox and PCManFM) was updated (I haven't look in several days and could it be updated already).
I'll read the wiki about systemd. Surely, it will be very interesting.
Yes, ConsoleKit is currently not actively maintained. It says to me that I pass too much time without check or read about it.
Too I think that beopen is just asking how get the same operation mode than in other distro and thinking that surely he must not change fstab.

ldm package provides all mountable devices in media directory including the installed drives partitions and usb devices(cameraCF deices,SD devices...perhaps some of the new portable devices).
Each is selectable for display of content and inserts into media menu upon connecting usb device. Available in media until removed from usb connector.

While utilizing the ldm package in media, it is possible to call for media display twice. Select the device desired in each window and transfer files from device to device.
