Recovery console while booting

So far, I have got this problem twice. Simply turning off and on the computer fixed it. I wonder whether I should worry about my hard disk.

It does not find the disk with UUID something and it gives me a recovery console.
ls /dev does not find the disk.

The weird part is that I don't use UUIDs in the /etc/fstab file.

Got this also but not with UUIDs. The message was something along the lines of  "Unable to find root partition: /dev/sda5. Fix the problem then try continuing the boot process".

Rebooted and all went well this time.

I just saw this once and haven't updated the machine in 5 days so it seems to be a rare occurrence over here.

I am using the testing repositories so it might just be some bug on a newer kernel or something. SMART data of the hard drive doesn't seem to indicate any problems or red flags but the computer is somewhat old (~7 years) so I can't guarantee it isn't a disk problem.

fstab is not relevant at that point.  I'd guess you have UUID's in your boot loader.

Old computer here too and the error appears the same and relatively rarely. It has happened twice in a period of about 2-3 weeks (I am not sure though). I update about every 2-3 days.

Is the root partition on the same drive as GRUB?  I am wondering if an aging drive is taking a bit longer to spin up and go ready sometimes.

Yes. I only have one disk.
