booting arch after install -> root device not found

I got this message and I've been looking all around everywhere, but nothing seems to work. I have installed Arch Linux to an external hard drive. In the emergency shell that shows up I had a browse of /dev/disk and only my internal hard disk shows up.
Does anyone know why my external hard disk does not show up in /dev ???

Did you include the USB hook in your intramfs?

did you... regenerate your initramfs after adding that hook? lsinitcpio will tell you what's really on the image.
