I've been getting into electronic music production and AlsaModularSynth appears to be a fantastic tool for synthesizing from scratch (on that note, if there are better options for modular software synths I'd love to hear them); the problem is getting it to actually use the correct sound card to play back the sounds that I create.
I use a Creative X-Fi sound card and this originally caused a couple problems for system-wide sound because although Alsa recognized it and worked right off the bat, every time I rebooted the system it had a habit of switching the numbering of the sound cards (it lists the Nvidia HDMI outputs, the motherboard's integrated card, and the X-Fi). To get it to stop doing this I had to address the default soundcard by name in the asound.conf file, rather than number, a solution which worked perfectly fine until now, dealing with only this one particular program.
Now the problem with AlsaModularSynth is that it is apparently not affected by the config file and whimsically switches back and forth between the sound cards every time I boot (often preferring the integrated, meaning if I want to hear it make any sound I have to crawl behind my system and plug the speakers into the integrated outputs, then back to the X-Fi when I'm done). Not a huge deal, it still works, but I'm trying to take this stuff seriously and it would be really nice to make things uniform.
I have previously gotten the sound to work by properly routing AMS's input to the system's output through JACK, but as I've said that's because it apparently numbered the devices correctly/randomly on one particular boot.
In the meantime I'll keep searching for a way to set this through AMS's config file, if one exists, or something. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Perhaps a better way to phrase my question: how do I tell an individual program to put its sound through a particular sound card?
