I have GRUB2 installed now, do I need to do any of this UEFI stuff?

Hey guys,

I already have GRUB2 installed with Lubuntu, I'm wondering if I can just install Arch and skip all the UEFI steps in the beginners guide, then run update-grub? Would this work?

Thanks!

You need to do the UEFI steps only if your system has UEFI in stead of BIOS. I don't know how new your system is or what is the adoption rate of UEFI, but more likely you just have a simple bios/ You should turn on your computer and enter into the setup and see if you have UEFI or not.

I have UEFI, that's not the question. What I'm saying is will I need to do these steps even though I already have Grub successfully installed with another distro? If I just boot into that other distro after the install is complete and run update-grub, would that be sufficient enough?

It probably will... the question is, do you want to use UEFI?  If not, then just stick with the bios grub, and if you stick with your bios grub, then yes, just update grub while booted from your ubuntu or from a chroot.

Or use a custom file that points to the other distro.

If your machine supports it and Lubuntu follows Ubuntu, it may well be using EFI already. In that case, I think just updating the config for grub should work provided it finds Arch OK.

Yeah, I have read numerous times that ubuntu and its variants have a real hard time finding Arch for some reason.
