Hi all,
How can I rename the gnome Desktop folder in my home directory to lowercase and leave it like that permanently?
When I delete or rename it gnome recreates it when I restart

I dont know if that is possible. I know you can have gnome use your home directory, instead of ~/Desktop.
That setting is in gconf..

bloody annoying that - i can't believe how many projects are freedesktop compliant but use uppercase letters in names - it's so retarded!

You can change the desktop from control centre-> System Administration -> Paths -> Desktop Path.
(...but that is for kde, not gnome)

It's not retarded - it's a feauture! (same shit, different name )
To err is human... to really foul up requires the root password.

I doubt its a hard-coded path, but if it is, just change it and recompile gnome...

Thanks guys,
Yeah it seems as if it might be hardcoded - and there's no way I'm gonna waste my weekend compiling gnome (again).
Cactus: That makes my desktop look even more messy :-) But if I could do that and just disable all icons from the desktop completely then that would actually be ok.

gconf again
/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
uncheck show_desktop
unfortunately, that removes right click on the desktop functionality. if you dont use that..then it doesnt matter.
I use right click alot to open terminals..other than that..i dont use it..*over the desktop*
right click will still work fine over app windows.
