[Solved] USB regression or hardware failure?

EDIT: It's a hardware failure.

The USB hub I use is a PCMCIA card with USB 2.0 ports. There are some things that it has never been able to power, like those external hard drives with only one USB connector. However it has always worked in the past for my printer and thumb drive.

Today, I noticed that things have got worse... "lsusb" no longer shows my printer. It does show my thumb drive but if I mount the drive and try to modify files on it, I get the following dmesg errors:

Everything still works if I use my motherboard's built in USB.

I think the only thing that my hub does properly is charging my USB mouse. That requires power only and no data transfer. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I don't use the hub for data transfer very often but I've used it at least once since July. Downgrading to linux-3.4.4, the kernel I was using in July didn't help. I also tried loading uhci_hcd with ignore_oc=1.

I realize, it would be better if I had first tested this with another OS. But finding a PCMCIA port may take some time. It might be less trouble for me to just buy a new hub.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.
