Cups 1.6.1, kernel 3.5.3
I have 2 printers that I tried and neither of them work. I just came back home from Europe after 9 months and reinstalled arch (update broke everything), and the printer worked before. I have a Lexmark X2600.
I can add it on cups webinterface just fine, but printing the test page results in this error:

I've tried the following:
- 2 different drivers from Lexmark's website (gutenberg doesn't support this model out of the box)
- rmmoding and modprobing usblp
- restarted cupsd a zillion times
- rebooted many times as well
- different USB ports, cables
- even a different printer. I went to the store and bought an Epson NX230. It gave me exactly the same message, with the Epson's drivers from the website.
- downgrading cups to 1.5.4, libcups, and ghostscript to 9.05
Sometimes the "state" on the localhost:631 for the printer would say "(null)" and sometimes "filter failed".
I'm really baffled. Can anyone please help?

Not sure this will help but just for kicks, try setting pdftops-renderer=pdftops.

Is this the correct command?
sudo lpadmin -p Lexmark_2600_Series -o pdftops-renderer=pdftops

I used:
sudo lpadmin -p HP1320 -o pdftops-renderer-default=pdftops
according to my notes. Obviously the printer name depends on the name of your printer.

Seems to be a common issue. See this thread and my post (#9) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=148496
As stated there, I had to install avahi and include the "avahi-deamon" in my rc.conf to get cups working again. Now everything works as before.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, but that didn't help. I already had avahi-daemon service running.

Try enabling debugging for cups and see if you get anything useful in the logs for cups.

I seem to have the very same problem so I'm waiting eagerly for a solution.

Me too please, seems to affect Colour Printers only, which may be obvious from the error messages I guess.

The answer seems to be to delete and reinstall the affected printers

Not for me, did that at least 10 times.

OK, it worked for me though, what printers are affected?

Lexmark x2600 and Epson NX230 - as mentioned in the OP.

Okay FWIW, I've just bought a brand new computer (obviously not because of this), and it still gives the same error. So definitely not hardware related, unless both of the printers are dead, which I doubt.

I can't say anything about the Lexmark, but my Epson is no longer even recognised as a printer by CUPS. I can still scan from it though. Weird!

I have it too on a samsung ML-1670. Printing works fine in my virtualbox windows.

Confirmed, printing works fine in VirtualBox running Windows 7 as a guest OS.

My mistake, I overwrote to cupsd.conf on one of the updates and forgot to make my amendments.
Everything works fine now

It appears that dnssd is not working (for me) with the latest updates.
Even though the following command worked...
[root@myhost ~]# lpinfo -v
network socket
network https
network ipps
network lpd
network ipp
network http
network smb
network beh
network dnssd://Brother%20HL-2270DW%20series._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/
network dnssd://Brother%20HL-2270DW%20series._ipp._tcp.local/
network lpd://BRW002258191E50/BINARY_P1
network cnijnet:/00-1E-8F-A6-5A-72
Neither of the above two dnssd URI's would work with my Brother printer - although the first one used to before the updates. I suspect the problem is with cups 1.6.1 as it includes the file usr/lib/cups/backend/dnssd. I did get the following URI to work though: lpd://192.168.0.10/BINARY_P1
[192.168.0.10 is the ip address of my network printer]. The cnijnet:/00-1E-8F-A6-5A-72 URI still works with my Canon printer.
I suggest googling for URI's that have been known to work with your brand (and perhaps model) of printer.
