xine vs. HDMI audio

My new system has an onboard ATI HDMI adapter, but I don't use it because my monitor's HDMI cable is plugged into another PC and I use VGA on the Linux box.  When I don't use HDMI video, HDMI audio is also not available but this board does have an analog driver.  In addition, I have an external USB audio adapter plugged in that I use for podcasts and skype.

This leads two two problems I have not been able to solve:
0) Whenever I reboot, udev assigns different device numbers to the three audio components -- HDMI, HDMI Analog, and USB.  At any given reboot any one of them might be assigned device #0 1, or 2.  As a result /etc/asound.conf constantly has to be reconfigured, as do skype, audacity, and idjc.  Is there a way I can force udev to always give these devices the same numbers?  I rarely reboot more than once a month, but even that's a bit of a hassle.

1) Once I get asound.conf set up correctly to use HDMI analog as the default device and assign the right device number to the external USB, everything works great -- streaming video from Firefox, my podcasts on idjc, voice chat in skype, movies in xine, etc.  HOWEVER, xine will simply not let me adjust volume with the onscreen volume control. I have to open another window and run alsamixer, or manually turn the knob on the speakers, to change volume while watching movies in xine.  The volume controls in other applications, like audacity and firefox while playing web-based media, work fine.

Any suggestions on solving either of those problems?
