internal microphone doesn't receive input for Skype

I'm not sure what to do about my microphone.  I've tried using Pulseaudio, Alsa, changing the settings doing the stuff on the alsa and pulseaudio wiki pages, and still my microphone seems to work but it won't receive any input and this is so freaking annoying.  *sigh*
