No Audio over HDMI without X11

My setup consists of a samsung NP530 laptop and an yamaha AV receiver linked by a HDMI cable.
My problem is that I'm only able to play sound over hdmi when it is enabled by xrandr and only under certain resolutions.

I want to be able to play stuff over HDMI without having an additional X11 screen.

Is this possible?
