[semi-solved] Skype (4.0.0.8-3 for x86_64) >100 CPU usage

Hi everyone,

I have installed skype on my laptop with an intel centino 2 processor and 6 gb of RAM. The software works well and I have a clear picture/sound when video chatting with others. I noticed, however, that while I am engaged in a video call, the CPU usage for skype usually exceeds 100%. When skype is open but idle, CPU usage stays around 3 %.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue and can propose a solution? I have looked online and others with similar issues have fiddled with pulseaudio, but I am not sure this is applicable to my case as I don't have it installed (I tried installing it which did not resolve the issue).

Thank you in advance.

That is normal in skype. Is a CPU killer.

Excuse my poor English.

But 100% seems a bit high. Would this not be dangerous for the processor over a longer conversation since this high level of activity is maintained at an almost constant level?

I don't think skype is nearly as resource-intensive when I have used it in Windows in the past, and this user seems to have solved the same issue although I am not sure it is the same cause

Is there anyway of diagnosing this and seeing what is causing so much processing power to be used?

Processors are made to work at 100%, all the time. And well, Skype is a giant bloated piece of Microsoft software, so what else would you expect?

Ok, as long as it will not damage the processor. I have marked thread as semi-solved, because I am still not entirely sure that 100% processor is normal behaviour for skype, although I admit it is bloated software tongue

I had to downgrade to skype 2.2.0.35, too much problems with version 4.. and in comparison version 2 literally 'flies'..
I never seen a worst software like skype 4 in my entire life :-/
