I can't get sound out from my Acer Aspire 5742. Not from internal and not from external speakers.
I have set volumes and everything from alsamixer, but still nothing. The internal microphone seems to work (tested with audacity).
Any ideas?

I use openbox, but this ugly trick worked for me:
1. installed gnome and all dependencies
2. run gnome once
3. logout, remove all gnome stuff
-> sound still working with openbox

Did this problem start recently?
Maybe in the last one month? Because I'm having the same problem.
I can't get sound, AFTER starting XFCE. Before I load X-Server, the sound plays, and continues after I load X.
But if I try to play any sound, AFTER X is loaded, there is no output.

When I restarted my pc the sound stopped working gain.
I disabled login manager (slim) and tried playing sound with aplay before i load X, but no sound. And when I startx with openbox, no sound again.
But if I run gnome, logout and run openbox I have sound.
Can anyone explain what gnome does to get my sound working - and how I can do the same without gnome?
@darnir: I went from ubuntu to arch recently on this machine, so I don't know if this would have worked before.
