I am currently updating the forums and I think I am going to slightly revamp the theme. The general colurs are quite good but I would like to remove the orange and get some new buttons:
I have made a rough outline of what I think would look good - obviously it is EXTREMELY rudimentry but compare it with the current buttons and you will see my aim

Threw these together real quick...I didn't know what you're background color would be, so I made them alpha transparent png's, which unfortunately won't look right in Internet Explorer. Are they basically what you were after?

Wow, nice work!

I like them but they dont really match the aur, bugs and docs buttons. I think that they should all be similar.

I would DEFINITELY downplay that whole logo thing.
The fact that the Star Trek people haven't sued you yet is beyond me.
I tried to tell you this before, but my communicator is broken.

Good idea to change the buttons only giving a slight change instead of changing the theme.

Elasticdog - excellent - just the kind of thing I was thinking.
They could maybe do with a small reduction in width and a slight increase in height.
This is my fault but you have seen that each button has an icon that relates to the action? Well, ideally we need that on the left. Maybe you could float the Arch logo behind the text?
Also, please not that there are several new buttons in the new mods - I'll post the png's later.
Easiest way to do the icons would be to find a gpl iconset and steal theirs:
Here are the other buttons, they are slightly different as they have different authors
They could also use a border of some sort
It is also worth mentioning that, no offense to iphitus, the other "new buttons" are way too blue - they could use some grey and black added to them

I'll work on some alternatives tonight, and post back later...

I'm not the first person to see the resemblence, but I did a search on the forum,
and I'm the only person to mention the dreaded "Star Trek" words.
Have I broken an unwritten Taboo?

Yes, we know, but who cares? Sorry, but there it. I'm tired and grumpy, there, you all know that too, now.

That thing looks more like Java's duke than the Arch logo... It doesn't even have a shadow like Arch does.

If the Trek people sued us, it would get laughed out of court.

Well, this is what I came up with for the whole set. I'm not sure I like the border around them, but thought I'd post what I have so far...
Questions, comments?
EDIT: Slightly modified the borders...less invasive now

ooh. i really like the aur, docs, and bugs images.
I think in the other buttons, the arch logo could be a bit smaller in the background...

I like your first buttons better. My opinion the logo in the background looks a little cluttered. Maybe you could scale the originals or play with the font sizes to make them look right?
And do we have to call it "Docs" instead of WIKI?
Offline
Yeah, those look very good. They will be smaller, though... right? They are kind of like HUGE right now. It might be nice if the words "topic" and "reply" were a bit darker, too.
Great work, elasticdog! 8)

I like the first set better, too. Clean, precise. Show them colors!

I actually like the first set better as well, but made the changes based on Dibble's suggestions. As far as making the Arch logo in the background smaller (for the second version of the buttons), that doesn't really work, as it makes it seem out of place, and not as much blending into the background. Size-wise, I made them with a bit more height, and a bit less width than the original version, once again upon Dibble's suggestion. I'll fool around with them a bit more and see if I can find a middle-ground...

Are you creating those illustrations? If so, what software do you use?

To create the icons, I'm using Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004 and also Inkscape. Most of the small icons are SVG files I'm altering, but they're taken from different open source icon sets and galleries.
Here's a version that I like much better...somewhat a compromise between the first two.
p.s. I was just guessing at the extra words for moderate, ban, and locked...I liked having a consistent look between the buttons, so let me know if those aren't the right actions those buttons perform.

Oh yeah, those are much nicer. The AUR, Wiki, and Bugs buttons are still too big, though. Will you be reducing their size? They look like they should be about 60% of the current size.
Hey, you are getting really good at this... 8)

I made the AUR, Wiki, and Bugs buttons 64x64 since that's exactly what they are now...not sure if Dibble wanted to change that or not.

We all discussed making them smaller back when iphitus made the current buttons, but I don't think he ever got around to it. It appears, though, that dibble has made some smaller ones for the test board.
