Hi, I am trying to setup Huawei E173 3G modem.
lsusb without usb_modeswitch

Well,
I just got one of these Huawei usb dongles too (not sure about the model number) and only way i've managed to get it to work is:
open dolphin -> automounts HiLink folder -> kdesu sh install_linux -> works.
All the management is done in webbrowser so its kind of nice web dongle / 3-4G modem.
You might want to google for the linux support for your modem as not all the 3G modems work with linux.
