hard freezes return II?

Very shortly after updating this system, I got another hard freeze. Forcing the computer off at the switch, I tried to reboot. The first two or three times, the power button had no effect but the third or fourth worked. (It is also possible I didn't hit it quite right - maybe it is fussy. Not sure it should be. Or maybe the machine just needed to be left for a minute.) I'm especially glad I'm using ext4 as almost every partition needed recovering from the journal.

I was a bit worried the crash might have actually occurred mid-upgrade but fortunately not. Here's the relevant part of the log:

[2012-09-29 23:24] Running 'pacman -Syu'
[2012-09-29 23:24] synchronizing package lists
[2012-09-29 23:24] starting full system upgrade
[2012-09-29 23:27] upgraded ffmpeg (1:0.11.1-1 -> 1:1.0-1)
[2012-09-29 23:27] upgraded libmysqlclient (5.5.27-4 -> 5.5.28-1)
[2012-09-29 23:27] upgraded mysql-clients (5.5.27-4 -> 5.5.28-1)
[2012-09-29 23:27] upgraded mysql (5.5.27-4 -> 5.5.28-1)
[2012-09-29 23:27] upgraded xterm (281-1 -> 282-1)
[2012-09-29 23:27] Exited with code 0

Shortly before the crash, the machine had been responding slowly. top showed Thunderbird taking enormous amounts of CPU (77%, 99%, 100%) and the machine felt rather hot. After restarting, Thunderbird was still taking large amounts of CPU so I've quit Thunderbird for now. I'm just wondering if anybody else is seeing this or if any of the updates might be causing issues. (Wondering about the database upgrades, mainly.)

Re: hard freezes return II?

I have not noticed any craziness with the most recent updates.  But I would like to mention that when I was having the non-shutting-down (but a resulting reboot instead) issue, I was shutting down by halting and then holding down the power button.  Whenever I shut down that way, the power button on my Thinkpad would not respond for a couple seconds.  This was kind of scary at first.  But I realized that it did it every time, so it must be serving some sort of function.

Re: hard freezes return II?

Maybe ThinkPads "just need a break"? Thanks for mentioning that - it makes the experience a little less worrying. (Software is one thing; hardware another...)

I think this sentiment has come up in our discussions before.
