Hard Drive Error from DMESG

I get the following error occasionally in dmesg regarding one of my sata hard drives.  I've tried googling but haven't found a definitive answer.  Peoples thoughts?

[62988.449993] ata7.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
[62988.450005] ata7.00: failed command: SMART
[62988.450019] ata7.00: cmd b0/da:00:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0
         res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout)
[62988.450030] ata7.00: status: { DRDY }
[62988.450033] ata7: hard resetting link
[62990.002407] ata7: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
[62990.007545] ata7.00: configured for UDMA/133
[62990.019112] ata7: EH complete

Do this mean the drive is failing?

Re: Hard Drive Error from DMESG

Do you use smartmontools?  If not you may want to start now.

Re: Hard Drive Error from DMESG

I've installed smartmontools WonderWoofy but I am not sure what to look out for.  I used the smartctl application and looked at the drives and couldn't find any issues per se.

Re: Hard Drive Error from DMESG

Did you run the tests? There is a pretty well done page on the wiki about how to use it.  There is a short and long test.  In your case, I would run the short test, but if that shows nothing, run the long one overnight just to e sure.

Thanks for that WonderWoofy, do a short test now.  Keep my fingers crossed.

Re: Hard Drive Error from DMESG

I wish you the best of luck.  Maybe this would be a good time to think about being a responsible computer user and backup.

Also, you should know that my Momentus XT fails some test, but after looking on the all knowing google, I found that it was actually a false positive that was very common.  So hopefully this is someting that is happening for you too.

Re: Hard Drive Error from DMESG

It wouldn't surprise me if the drives were failing TBH.  There are 2 x 1tb Western Digital Greens that have been in this computer for nearly 4 years now.

Yeah, unfortunately you never know what you are going to get.  Sometimes the crappiest of drive will last for a decade and sometimes it will die two days after warrantly expires.

Re: Hard Drive Error from DMESG

Well the drives are not so bad them selfs, but they suffer from high increase of "193 Load_Cycle_Count". WD have a tool called "wdidle3" witch unfortuantly is a dos only app, but can disable a spindown completly.

There is a "idle3-tools", or just use hdparm -J
