How to set up sound mixing for 3 speakers (left, right, centre)
Hey guys, I've got 3 speakers hooked up to my computer out of a 5.1 speaker set because I've got no room for the rears. I want to mix all audio across the three if possible. Technically the sub accepts a separate channel input, but it's also happy just stripping the bass off the other speaker channels so 3.1 mixing isn't necessary.
I tried looking for instructions on how to do it with alsa and asoundrc but all of them mention 2.0, 4.0, 5.1 and 7.1 and don't say anything about custom setups. Any hints or links?

Well, here's how to do it for 6 speakers - modify that.
I suppose "surround41" is the closest match for your setup, rather than surround51. You'll have to check that the channels match up, at each step. speaker-test is very useful for debugging.

See I don't think it will mix properly because those setups are mixing for rear sound. I tried "surround30" but video programs failed to open files.

Oh yes it will. Doesn't matter if the 2 channels are silent.
surround30 isn't defined - look in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf

It would probably make more sense to you if you created a "surround30" PCM, for your 3 speakers.
As I say, speaker-test is the magic command to test it all in stages - that's how I did it.
