Strange headset behavior

I'm using the Corsair Vengeance 1500 USB headset, but I have some slight problems with it.

First of all, I can't lower the volume as much as I want to. If I go below 30 (ish) percent in GNOME volume manager, the audio shuts off completely. This is rather annoying since 30% is actually kind of high.

The second problem I'm having is that the audio is slighty lower on the right. Sure, I could go change the balance every time I connect the headset, but there must be a more efficient way to accomplish this.

And lastly, the mic doesn't work with Skype. This is supposedly fixed with the bin32-skype-oss package from the AUR, but I can't confirm that as of now since the AUR is down.

Don't even know how to begin trouble shooting for any of these problems. I've never taken the time to understand the audio stack unfortunately, so I need your help to solve this.
