cannot find some wireless networks
As the topic says, then my laptop won't find some wireless networks for some reason.One of them is my wireless network at home - big problem!
The SSID does not show up in the list. I tried manually connecting to the network (typing in the SSID) without luch (asked for password, typed in - still nothing) - then i removed the WPA key on the network so it was open - still nothing.
The laptop does find other networks - tried setting up my a hotspot on my phone - which worked.
Net network card is a Broadcom BCM43227 802.11b/g/n network card
Any suggestions ?

Are the missing networks type 'n' by any chance?
Have you looked at the output of sudo iwlist scan
Look for what APs are visible, and what the bands are.

I don't think thats the problem - the wifi card does support 'N' - and i got both 2.4 gHz and 5gHz networks (2 of each to be exact) different channels too. I'm 1 meter away from the router so nothing is blocking the signal either. Whats wierd is that i changed a VGA cable on my desktop computer, while doing that - without doing anything to my laptop - then it connected to the network.
I don't get whats causing trouble ..

Okay, "Slappy" is in the 2.5 GHz band, and is seen by your machine. The card may support 'n', but I do not see any 5 GHz APs in that list; are you sure it is working in both modes?
Regardless, you should be able to connect to Slappy.
As to the VGA cable, it is probably a fluke. If it is repeatable, I'd say you've a major EMI or ground loop problem. I bet you cannot repeat it.

In the gnome network connect tool - I didn't check the other tools.
