Rapid intermittent fan turning on/off on aLenovo u410 with Gnome3

It's working perfectly on my laptop except that the fan turns on very loudly for about 2 seconds every 3 seconds, even when I'm not doing anything on it. I'm guessing that either the fan is extremely sensitive to even the slightest load or is confused by a "threshold" level of load, or that it is given conflicting signals. How should I go about determining what exactly is going on and fixing this issue?

It really creeps me out because this occurs when the computer is idle. When I start actually running more CPU intensive tasks (repeatedly opening and closing the GNOME activity bar), the fan turns on loudly and then off, staying off for a long time, until it "goes idle," at which time the strange behavior I described in the last paragraph restarts.

Maybe try setting CPUFreq to conservative. I've had similar issues on an older laptop and that resolved them smile.
